Huskies Wrestle to 1-1 in First Day of the Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, VA--The Bloomsburg University wrestling team went 1-1 in its first two matches at the 2006 Virginia Duals. The Huskies opened with a 19-13 win over Old Dominion before falling to 15th-ranked and top-seeded, Indiana, 42-0. (The Huskies were also penalized one team point in the match with Indiana.)

A win from Mike Spaid (Boyertown/Boyertown) at heavyweight sealed the win for the Huskies against Old Dominion. With 30 seconds remaining in the third period, with the scored tied, 1-1, Spaid scored on a takedown against the Monarchs' John Dolida.

125-Ninth-ranked Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) suffered his second dual-match loss in a season with an 8-5 loss to Old Dominon's Bryan Lashomb. Wrestling with a back injury, Sees took an early 3-2 lead after the first period. In the second, Lashomb jumped ahead, scoring three points going into the final period. Lashomb scored two backpoints and earned a point for riding time to take the decision for Old Dominon.

133-Ricky Donald (Millville/Bloomsburg) put the Huskies on the board with a 6-2 win over Ryan Williams. In the first, Donald scored on a takedown to take an early lead. In the second period, Donald and Williams exchanged reversals to give Donald a 4-2 lead at the beginning of the final period. After selecting the defensive position, Donald recorded and escape with 1:30 remaining in the match to seal the win. His final point came from 2:20 of riding time.

141-Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown) gave the Huskies a 6-3 lead with a 5-3 overtime win over B.J. Compton. After a scoreless first period, Forbes scored on an escape at the 1:17 mark in the second to take a 1-0 lead going into the final period. In the final period, Compton got an escape four seconds in to tie even the bout at one. After a Forbes takedown with 1:52 remaining, another Compton escape narrowed the lead. With one second left in the match, Compton was awarded a point for a fleeing the mat penalty against Forbes. In overtime, Forbes scored on a takedown with 48 seconds remaining.

149-The Huskies got their third straight win as George Hickman (Wilmington, NC/Riverside) earned an 11-2 marjo decision win over the Monarchs' Jeff Becker. Hickman took an early 2-0 lead going into the second period where he scored another three points to take a 5-1 lead. At the 1:02 mark, Hickman scored on a takedown after a Becker escape 50 seconds into the period. In the final minute, Hickman recorded two more takedowns and was awarded a point after Becker was penalized for his second stalling call. Hickman's final point came from 2:35 of riding time.

157-Bloomsburg's Aric Fuhrman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic) rebounded from a loss in the Huskies' last dual match to earn a 6-1 decision win over Old Dominion's Nick Pullano. Following a scoreless first period, Fuhrman scored on an escape at the 1:20 mark to get on the board for the Huskies. With 30 seconds remaining in the period, he recorded a takedown to take a 3-0 lead into the final period. In the third, after a Pullano escape, Fuhrman scored on a takedown before earning a point for riding time to win the match.

165-Frank Beasley (Oden, IL/Centralia) fell in a tough overtime match to the Monarchs' Robby Gosnell. Gosnell took an early 3-2 lead in the first period with a takedown and an escape with only five seconds left in the period after a Beasley escape with 2:00 remaining. After a scoreless second period, Beasley scored on an escape with 47 seconds remaining to send the match into overtime. In the overtime period, Gosnell won the match on a takedown with 28 seconds remaining in the match.

174-T.J. Hansen recorded the second-straight bout win for the Monarchs with a 5-1 win over the Huskies' Andrew Jordan (Newark, DE/St. Mark's). Hansen, after building a 2-0 lead in the first period, scored on an escape in the second and was awarded two points for stalling calls against Jordan to take the match for Old Dominion.

184-Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) recorded a gutsy 6-5 win over the Monarchs' David Mendoza. Battling the flu since yesterday, Shirk took an early 2-1 lead going into the second period. After an escape from the defensive position, Shirk countered a Mendoza takedown with another escape with 16 seconds left in the period to take a 4-3 lead going into the third. In the final period, Mendoza scored a quick escape from the defensive position to tie the match, 4-4. Just four seconds later, at the 1:58 mark, Shirk scored on another takedown to take a 6-4 lead. Mendoza recorded an escape with 1:28 remaining, but was unable to score any more points, giving Shirk the win.

197-Adam Wright closed the gap with the Huskies, earning a major decision win over Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin). Wright led 4-1 after the first period, earning five more points in the second on a takedown and two escapes en route to the 12-4 win, making the team score 16-13 going into the final bout.

HWT-Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) secured the win for the Huskies with a takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the match to help the Huskies advance to the second round of the tournament.

In their second match, the Huskies lost to the University of Indiana, 42-0, getting shutout for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

125-In the first match-up, Bloomsburg forfeited the 125-pound bout, giving Indiana an early 6-0 lead.

133-The Hoosiers' Andrae Hernandez recorded a 12-1 major decision win over Donald. Donald scored his lone point on a first-period escape.

141-Forbes dropped a tight 3-2 decision to the Hoosiers' Nick Spatolo. After a scoreless first period, Spatolo got an escape to take a 1-0 lead with 1:19 left in the second period. The rest of the second was scoreless, before Forbes scored an escape of his own to even the score. With 36 seconds remaining in the match, Spatolo got a takedown to jump ahead. Sixteen seconds later, Forbes escaped to cut the lead to one, but was unable to get another takedown in the closing seconds.

149-Indiana's Brandon Cooper got a 5-3 win over the Huskies' Hickman. Just 20 seconds into the match, Cooper got a takedown, but Hickman rallied with a quick escape. In the second period, Hickman got an escape from the defensive position to notch the score at one. With 1:14 left in the period, Cooper recorded another takedown, countered by a Hickman escape to take a 4-2 lead going into the final period. After choosing the defensive position, Cooper put one more point on the board off an escape to take the match for the Hoosiers.

157-Sixth-ranked Brandon Becker got a 4-0 win over Fuhrman to give the Hoosiers a 20-0 lead. Becker scored on a takedown and a reversald in the first two periods to get the win for Indiana.

165-Jason Crawford (New Albany/Wyalusing Valley) suffered an 11-1 major decision loss to Indiana's Max Dean. Dean racked up five point sin the first period, followed up by a three-point second period to take an eight point lead into the final two minutes. In the third, Dean scored another takedown after Crawford escaped from the defensive position and held on to compile 5:03 riding time to take the match, giving the Hoosiers a 24-0 lead.

174-Seventh-ranked Marc Bennett got an early takedown at the 2:14 mark en route to a pin 1:28 into the match over the Huskies' Beasley. With the pin, the Hoosiers took a 30-0 lead.

184-Despite two escapes from Jordan, the Hoosiers' Curran got a 5-2 win. With a 2-1 lead going into the final period, Curran scored on a takedown and riding time to get the victory for Indiana.

197-Brady Richardson recorded the Hoosiers' second pin of the match at the 1:33 mark against Bloomsburg's Hasseman. At the 1:40 mark, Richardson got a takedown en route to the fall.

HWT-In the final bout, Indiana's Dave Herman won a 5-2 decision over Spaid. After falling behind 2-0 following the first period, Spaid cut the lead to one with an escape at the 1:02 mark of the second. In the final period, recorded a takedown with 55 seconds remaining. Spaid was able to escape with 38 seconds left, but was unable to score. Herman earned a point after racking up 1:57 in riding time.

With the loss in the quarterfinals, the Huskies move to second round of consolations where they will face the University of Virginia. Match time is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday.
